Planning Croatia? Here’s why Montenegro deserves a place in your Adriatic itinerary.
if Croatia is already on your travel list, let me put one more place on your radar: Montenegro.
For many of my American clients, Montenegro is still a bit of a mystery. Croatia? Absolutely. Dubrovnik, Hvar and Split have been on everyone’s radar for years. Montenegro usually gets a curious:
“Okay… tell me more.”
And honestly, I love that.
For those of us from the region, Montenegro isn’t a recent discovery. It’s a place we have known and loved for years — for its old stone towns, beautiful coastline and almost ridiculously dramatic scenery.
It may be small, but it somehow fits medieval villages, secluded bays, superyacht marinas, mountain landscapes and some seriously impressive hotels into one very compact destination.
If you’re considering luxury travel in Montenegro, especially as part of a longer Croatia itinerary, this is where I would start.

Don’t squeeze it into a rushed day trip from Dubrovnik
Montenegro still gives you that increasingly rare Mediterranean feeling: you have discovered somewhere, rather than simply followed everyone else there.
Let’s start with the hotel everyone has been waiting for
You simply cannot talk about luxury travel in Montenegro without talking about Aman Sveti Stefan.
You have probably seen the photographs: a fortified stone village rising from the Adriatic, connected to the mainland by one narrow isthmus. It is one of those places that looks almost too perfect to be real.
The resort is made up of two distinct parts. On the mainland, Villa Miločer occupies a former royal residence surrounded by cedar, pine and olive trees. Across the bay, the island of Sveti Stefan is home to restored stone cottages and suites connected by cobbled lanes and shaded courtyards.
Planning Note
Now is the time to plan Montenegro for 2027.
Aman Sveti Stefan is currently available to book from May 1, making late spring an ideal time to visit—when the Mediterranean is at its best, before the summer crowds arrive.
And yes, I am genuinely excited about its return.
This isn’t simply a beautiful hotel. It is one of those rare properties where the hotel itself becomes the reason for the journey.
My slightly biased wish?
I would love to see Aman’s Mobility & Recovery Programme by Novak Đoković come to Sveti Stefan one day.
Novak is Aman’s Global Ambassador and Wellness Advisor, and his programme brings together movement, conditioning and restorative wellness.
Nothing has been announced for Montenegro, so this is purely my wishful thinking.

Do you want a polished, full-service resort where everything is beautifully taken care of?
Then take a look at One&Only Portonovi.
Set on Boka Bay near Herceg Novi, it combines spacious rooms and villas, waterside restaurants, a beach club and those wonderful bay-and-mountain views that make Montenegro feel so different from the rest of the Mediterranean.

The hotel is set inside a restored 19th-century fortress on its own island at the entrance to Boka Bay. You arrive by boat, which immediately changes the mood of the stay.
It feels private, creative and wonderfully removed from everything.
Banyan Tree’s holistic wellness philosophy fits naturally here, but what I particularly love is Mamula’s artistic side. Its Artist-in-Residence program, exhibitions, workshops and music events give the property a real personality.
This isn’t simply another beautiful hotel by the sea.
It is the one I would choose for clients who love architecture, privacy, design and hotels with a genuine sense of place.

Then there is Mamula Island, which is something completely different.

A private boat lets you explore Boka Bay at your own pace, stop in Perast, swim in quiet coves and approach the waterfront towns the way they were meant to be seen.

I know the distances look tiny on a map. You may be tempted to organize everything by car and assume you can quickly hop between towns.
Technically, you can.
Would I plan the entire trip that way? Absolutely not.
The scenery also looks completely different from the water. Old stone villages sit along the shore while the mountains appear to rise almost directly behind them.
The road certainly has its moments. In July and August, it can also develop a very close and personal relationship with traffic.
So use private transfers when you need them, but give yourself at least one full day on the water.

Why Montenegro pairs so beautifully with Croatia
If Dubrovnik is already part of your plans, Montenegro is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to extend the journey.
Herceg Novi sits just across the border, at the entrance to Boka Bay, and can be reached by private transfer in around an hour, depending on traffic and the border crossing. Kotor is further along the bay, but still close enough to make the combination feel natural rather than complicated.
The two destinations share the same Adriatic coastline, yet the experience changes almost immediately. Dubrovnik brings history, energy and one of the region’s most iconic cities. Montenegro adds dramatic mountains, quieter bays and a slower, more private rhythm.
What I would not recommend is treating Montenegro as a rushed day trip. Give it at least three or four nights, so you have time to enjoy your hotel, spend a day on the water and experience Boka Bay without constantly watching the clock.
